Manager, Pharmacy

Job Summary:

The Manager, Pharmacy is responsible and accountable for executing the organization’s Clinical Pharmacy Plan through the development, implementation and evaluation of a drug evaluation system that meets facility needs and the requirements of regulating agencies.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, directs, implements and evaluates a comprehensive pharmacy program consisting of a large and complex drug distribution system and clinical pharmacy services of substantial scope
  • Develops, implements and reviews pharmacy policies and procedures to ensure that the services conform to facility needs, and legislation
  • Supervises, directly and through subordinates, professional pharmacists and junior staff involved in preparing and dispensing medication
  • Provides in house, clinical pharmacy services such as patient education and counseling, drug use reviews, pharmacokinetics, and pharmaceutical consultations
  • Plans and controls the pharmacy’s budget and use of equipment, space and supply resources to effectively meet the Pharmacy’s goals and objectives
  • Prepares periodic reports of pharmacy program evaluations
  • Prepares estimates on pharmacy needs in terms of personnel, drug inventories, supplies and equipment
  • Prepares duty rosters for staff
  • Plans and controls the approved budget for the Department
  • Provides in-house training and/or encourages staff to attend specialty training to maintain and upgrade their skills
  • Leads and develops clinical audit and research
  • Maintains pharmacy records according to facility and regulating and accrediting agency guidelines
  • Adheres to Accreditation Standards, Public Health, Infection Control, Occupational Health and Safety, MoH/ DHWSP, and TRHA Protocols, Guidelines, Policies and Procedures and legislation
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of professional pharmacy, specifically in the areas of hospital and clinical pharmacy
  • Extensive knowledge of pharmacy legislation
  • Ability to supervise directly and through subordinates the work of professional pharmacists and other subordinate pharmacy staff.
  • Ability to maintain perpetual inventory records, prepare reports and impose adequate controls over the supply and dispensing of medications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinate staff, physicians, nurses and other health and administrative professionals.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree/Diploma in Pharmacology from an accredited educational institution
  • The incumbent is required to possess a Pharmacist’s licence recognized by the Pharmacy Board of Trinidad and Tobago
  • At least ten (10) years work experience, two (2) of which must be at an administrative or managerial experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Qualifications/ Certification in Management will be an asset

Special Requirements:

  • Willing to work overtime, public holidays and weekends as requested:
    • The incumbent is required to perform Emergency On-call duties based on an On-call roster as directed by the Essential Service Industry Standards for a 24-hour Health Care System.
    • The incumbent is also required to work in a shift environment covering 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of patients’ information at all times.
